Agri Labour Australia recruits Pacific workers for host employers under the Australian Government’s Pacific Labour Scheme and the Seasonal Worker Program. As a Worker Mentor you will be responsible for the development and care of Pacific Workers placed by Agri Labour Australia. This position is also known in the industry as Pastoral Carer and Welfare Officer, but Agri labour Australia uses the title ‘Worker Mentor’ to emphasise the worker management and capacity building aspects of the role.
You will support and train Paciifc workers to adjust quickly to their new life in Australia. You will be involved with organising Induction Training and Orientation Training for the workers in their new location. You will ensure drivers undergo Agri Labour Australia’s comprehensive driver training, and that all workers can access medical services, and manage their accommodation. You will implement the Pacific Labour Scheme’s incident management and reporting protocols, as required. You will also ensure compliance with ALA’s policies as outlined in ALA’s Employment Policies and Worker Mentor Manual.
You will be committed to ALA’s capacity-building approach to workers and our goals of ensuring that workers are: i) Safe; ii) Productive; iii) Happy; iv) Achieving Their Savings and Development Goals in Their Home Country. You will have a strong understanding of Pacific culture and be able to provide advice, solutions and support to workers that is effective and culturally appropriate.
This is not just a ‘9-to-5’ position. Worker issues can arise at any time. You will need to be available for out-of-hours calls and be available to provide advice over the phone if required on weekends. While the role is for one person, Agri Labour Australia will consider applications from a well-suited husband and wife team.
The role will likely be part-time (20hrs per week) with the possibility of full-time work. While the role is for one person, we are open to applications from a well-suited husband and wife or partner team.
Your Skills & Experience
The ideal candidate will have practical management skills, and possess a high level of empathy and strong understanding of cross-cultural differences. You will be able to communicate effectively with people of different backgrounds and interact in a culturally appropriate and respectful manner.
To be suitable for the role, you must also address the following:
- Comfortable using Microsoft Office and smartphone apps
- Understand privacy and confidentiality issues in regard to welfare
- Be available for emergency contact around the clock
- Have a general knowledge of health facilities in Millmerran or Grantham/Toowoomba
- Have connections with community organisation, churches, recreation centre or other community organisation
- Be a practical problem solver
- Can work unsupervised and show initiative
- Enjoy working with people from other cultures
