The Role

As WHS Manager, you are responsible for ensuring that excellence and innovative Health and Safety functions are instilled and implemented into organisational practices to deliver a proactive and risk-based framework for decision making and recommendations to stakeholders.

The role involves interfacing with industry, regulatory and board members through to contractors and employees and is a key member of the organisation’s leadership team. Reviewing and updating site safety policies, processes and risk assessments, your duties will include but not be limited to:

  • Work with stakeholders to develop, implement and maintain WHS Management System aligned with legislative requirements
  • Coordinate WHS activities across the business and development and implementation of key strategies and annual Health and Safety objectives and action plans
  • Advise management and stakeholders about responsibilities under the Act and the overall state of occupational health and safety in the workplace including monthly management reporting
  • Provide training and guidance for work health and safety committees and coordinate their reporting requirements
  • Prepare and deliver appropriate training and education materials including induction materials and toolbox talks
  • Review WHS committee activities to ensure hazards and unsafe workplace conditions and work practices have been identified and monitor corrective activities to ensure risks are eliminated, isolated or minimized
  • Coordinate with stakeholders to ensure appropriate incident reporting and comply with any associated audits and investigations
  • Conduct or oversee the investigation of accidents, incidents, near misses and unsafe working conditions including reporting of identified hazards and appropriate risk control measures
  • Ensure companies/facilities have adequate safety and fire protection procedures in place, and the testing, validation and training of wardens and staff is ongoing.

Skills & Experience

This role is ideally suited to someone who has a qualification in Health and Safety (minimum Diploma level) and experience in the facilitation of risk assessments, hazard inspections and safety audits. You will come with existing knowledge of the Australian and state government standards associated with health and safety management and be able to effectively influence and lead teams to safer work practices. This role will require the successful candidate to have the flexibility to travel frequently to company sites.

To be considered for the role, it’s important you can address the following criteria:

  • Minimum Diploma in Health & Safety
  • Self-starter with coaching/teaching approach to safety
  • Experience in risk assessments, hazard inspections, auditing
  • Excellent communication and negotiation skills
  • Microsoft office and computer skills are essential
