The Department of Home Affairs (DHA) has recently confirmed ongoing delays in processing subclass 482 SID visa applications, following updates shared during the latest Migration Institute of Australia (MIA) webinar.

These delays are primarily due to the DHA diverting resources to finalise a significant backlog of legacy Temporary Skill Shortage (TSS) subclass 482 applications that were submitted prior to the program reforms introduced in December 2024. It was also noted that overall TSS 482 visa applications rose by 44% year-on-year — contributing further to extended processing timelines.

Why this matters for agribusinesses

As the horticulture and broader agribusiness sectors continue to rely on skilled migration to address ongoing workforce shortages, visa delays can significantly impact workforce planning, productivity and operational continuity.

While the DHA has indicated that once the legacy caseload is resolved, resources will be re-allocated to improve processing times for new SID visa applications, employers should anticipate continued delays in the short term.

What employers can do now

To minimise disruption and avoid further delays, we recommend the following:

  • Submit decision-ready applications. Ensure all supporting documentation is complete, accurate and compliant at the time of submission.
  • Plan for extended lead times. Build in additional time when setting start dates for international hires.
  • Seek expert advice. Agri Talent’s skilled migration team is here to help you navigate these evolving timelines and to support your workforce planning with confidence.
